How this list was compiled: Own list of Mandarin Chinese words, chosen for this site on 2026-10-13, in four sets of twelve. Every word was read that day in three references. The CC-CEDICT dictionary, release of 2026-10-13 (https://www.mdbg.net/chinese/dictionary?page=cc-cedict, project home https://cc-cedict.org/wiki/, under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license), gave the simplified form, the traditional form, the reading and the English meaning. The Revised Mandarin Chinese Dictionary of Taiwan's Ministry of Education, read through its open copy at https://www.moedict.tw/, has an entry for all 48 words under the traditional form. The word's Chinese entry at Wiktionary, the free dictionary (https://en.wiktionary.org/), whose text is under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license (https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/鉛筆, the same address pattern for each word), gave the meaning, the register and the pinyin a second time. The pinyin in parentheses is written from the tone numbers of the first dictionary by the rule for placing tone marks in the article Pinyin of English Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinyin), and it is the first Mandarin reading of the Wiktionary entry; the Ministry's dictionary gives the same reading for 47 words and the Taiwan reading ér zǐ for 儿子. Principal is Wiktionary's English for 校长; the first dictionary has headmaster. No definition is copied from a dictionary: the English is our own short gloss. The answers under the list rest on the same entries and on the article Pinyin, read the same day. Licence: own work

How it works

This Chinese vocabulary worksheet prints twelve Mandarin words down the left, each in simplified characters with its pinyin in parentheses, and the English meanings in another order down the right. Numbers, food and school words follow the family set.
