Five lists, from the Sun to the Royal Society
Start from a list splits the 100 words: Sun, Planets and Orbits (22) has Geocentric, Perihelion and Supernova; Telescopes and Microscopes (19) has Air Pump and Logarithms; Anatomy and Chemistry (10); Experiment and Reason (24) has Induction and Inertia; Books, Cities and Societies (25) has Principia, Micrographia and Uraniborg.
Add the scientists to the grid
The meanings name the scientists: "The planet whose puzzling path Tycho Brahe set Kepler to work out." is Mars. No person is a puzzle word. Type Copernicus, Galileo, Kepler or Newton on the last line of the list and the grid takes each one in.
- Easy Scientific Revolution keeps to 21 words of 3 to 5 letters, such as Sun, Orbit, Lens, Prism and Laws.
- Under More options, tick Show clues, not words: "Saturn's largest moon, discovered by Huygens." leads to Titan.
- The grid drops spaces, so look for MILKYWAY, AIRPUMP, FREEFALL and ROYALSOCIETY.
Questions and answers
What was the Scientific Revolution?
A change in how nature was studied in Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries. The new science leaned more on mathematics and on gathering and interpreting evidence. It marks a boundary between ancient thought and modern science.
When was the Scientific Revolution?
It is frequently said to begin in 1543, when Copernicus's book on the heavens and Vesalius's on the human body were printed, and to culminate in 1687 with Newton's Principia. The supernova of 1572 has also been suggested as its start.
What does heliocentric mean?
Having the Sun at the center. Copernicus published a heliocentric model in 1543, against the older geocentric one that put the Earth there. Kepler later showed that the planets' orbits are ellipses, not circles.
What came after the Scientific Revolution?
The Enlightenment. Newton was a key figure in the Scientific Revolution and in the Enlightenment that followed. For that unit, print the Enlightenment word search.
