Questions and answers
What does crosse mean in lacrosse?
A crosse is the lacrosse stick. The word is French for stick: French missionaries who watched the game in the 1630s wrote of la crosse, and the sport took its name from it. Rule books still say crosse; players say stick.
What is cradling in lacrosse?
Cradling is rocking the stick back and forth with the wrists and arms so the ball stays in the pocket while a player runs. It also makes the ball harder for a defender to check loose.
What is the difference between a faceoff and a draw?
A faceoff starts the men's game: two players crouch with the ball on the ground between their stick heads. A draw starts the women's game: two standing players press the ball between their sticks at waist height, then lift.
What is the crease in lacrosse?
The crease is the circle marked around each goal. In the men's game attackers may not step into it, and the goalie cannot be checked while standing inside it.
